The Drau cycle path starts in the unique and spectacular Dolomites, within reach of the world-famous Drei Zinnen mountain massif. Along the young Drau, the first leg runs downhill through the narrow Puster Valley - accompanied by lush meadows on the left and the sheer rugged mountain flanks of the Dolomites on the right. Villages, castles and gothic churches are visible witnesses of an old, cultural area, which was once governed by the Counts of Görz/Gorizia.
The water tumbling down the wild streams soon turns the Drau into an impressive body of water with alluvial forests, gravel banks and islands. There are countless spots at the water's edge where you might want to stop and take a rest. In the distance the Rauchkofel, the mountain which towers above Lienz, is a sign that you are getting close to your destination.
If you want to get to know the countryside and the people a little better, you can stop off at Toblach, Innichen, Sillian or Lienz, the main towns along the cycle path. This is where southern flair meets alpine culture in an unspoilt mountain landscape.
